How does one get to be a "mystery shopper"?

Written by admin on March 24th, 2009

I was wondering if anyone has ever been or known of anyone else that is a "Mystery Shopper" - a person that goes into stores/restaurants posing as an everyday customer - to evaluate the customer service? If so, how did you/they get that job? Any numbers or people I could talk to would be a great help.

I have also seen sights online offering "information" if you pay a one time fee of $19.95 - I am NOT interested in doing that.
Serious answers only plz.

You can go on line check Shadow Shopper.com and apply. you don't have to pay they usually pay you depending on how you work.

If you go to a legitimate job search website you should be able to find one without paying anything- Monster, Careerbuilder, etc.

Don't expect to get enough work to make much money. I'm not even sure you get reimbursed for all of your expenses when at the stores or restaurants.

Research or marketing companies that run mystery shop programs hire people for those roles. Instead of searching for the programs that charge you to get referred to these companies, find them yourself online. I could list a whole bunch of them, but if you search "mystery shopper program" or "secret shopper company" you'll find enough to keep you busy.

If it's for foodservice, you'll get a portion of what you spend back. For products, each company treats it differently… whether you return the item to them and they process it, etc… once you start with a company, you'll find out.

Like any research, companies look for a wide variety of people to do the secret shopping work. And they have far more applicants than positions, so you will want to apply to several companies. Most importantly, be ready to explain why you think you'd be good at it. It's a job that you're applying for, and you have to get hired to get it!
