Does anyone know how to go about being a mystery shopper?

I have always been interested in this field of work and I always wanted to work as a mystery shopper but I have never had any luck. 
Any tips or knowledge?

We tried one of them online and it was not even worth the time and effort. I forget the name of the organization - but the payments and merchandise were so chintzy as to not be worth it.
